B2022 Community Engagement Team organised, delivered and participated in a series of events to Celebrate the Achievements of Women who are Breaking the Bias in Birmingham and across the Commonwealth. Our main event was held @ Edgbaston Stadium on 7th March 2022
This year’s International Women’s Day theme was Breaking the Bias. In recognition of the special day/ week, we delivered presentation/ workshops to Godiva IWD in Coventry and Asihanna Community Centre In Sparkbrook Birmingham.
Our main event was held at Edgbaston Stadium on 7th March, iconic as it will host the first T20 women's competition at this years B2022 Commonwealth Games.
The event saw over 300 women and girls from across the region 'In conversation with' our diverse panel, exploring the journeys of four inspirational women on how they have broken the bias in their various avenues of sport.
Speakers included:
-Izzy Wong - Professional cricketer for Phonix and England
-Archie Kalyana – Diversity BBC Producer for Sport
-Donner Frazer OBE - Former 400 metres athlete and currently Head of Inclusion and Engagement @ B2022
-Nichola Carlton – Director of Wheelchair Basketball/ Basket Baller
The event was supported by Edgbaston and Birmingham City Council's Corporate Black workers group (CBWSG), with key note addresses from Michelle Leavesley- one of the Board of Directors @ Edgbaston and Marcia Reid-chair of BCC CBWSG.
Panel Discussions gave the audience members to engage with Speakers and the opportunity to ask questions. Exciting Workshops and Exhibition stands showcased amazing work to Break the Bias, including:
1. Careers talk – CV/cover letters/interview techniques – for Schools & Colleges
2. Media talk – BBC / Producer – for Schools & Colleges
3. Motivational workshop – Former World Karate Champion Janice Argyle
4. Theatre skills for life – Women in Theatre – Women in Cricket pilot.
The event also included a Pitch Visual with everyone invited to participate in a group photograph celebrating a diverse range of women in the West Midlands
