The development of the Greater London Community Campus started September 2017, as the Youth Charter began to transfer its HQ to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. At the time an increasing number of Young Lives were being Lost on the capitals streets, including Corey Junior Davis, a 14-year-old schoolboy gunned down in a park in Newham on September 4th 2017. A tragic loss of a young life that was all to similar to that of Benji Stanely, also 14, gunned down in Moss Side, Manchester, 24 years earlier, from which the Youth Charter's work began.
In January 2018, at the Newham’s Youth Movement’s ‘Addressing Safety through Active Participation’ (ASAP) Conference - which was attended by friends of Corey Junior - Youth Charter Founder and Chair, Prof. Geoff Thompson MBE FRSA DL, pledged to provide: Somewhere To Go (where they would be safe and taken off the streets); Something To Do (with sporting, artistic, cultural and digital activities); and Someone To Show Them (how to develop their mental, physical and emotional life skills resilience).
The Youth Charter consulted widely with young people and community organisations, this included the Newham Youth Commission, which Prof. Geoff Thompson co-chaired, and included over 500 young people in series of workshops through 2018/19. Furthermore, the Youth Charter delivered a number of Youthwise Activities with schools, sport clubs and youth organisations.
A Social Coach Leadership Programme (SCLP) workshop was delivered in at the end of January and attended by over 300 people from East London.
The East London Community Campus became the Greater London with an Olympic Park Community Campus and a Barking & Dagenham Community Campus, and is now the Newham Community Campus as part of the Greater London Community Campus, with other London Borough Community Campuses under development.
